MANIFEST DESTINY IS ALIVE AND WELL

By William F. Frost

November 11, 2004

Manifest Destiny, the force, behind the movement westward during the development of the United States of America, has come full circle. From an insistent force in the 18th and 19th Centuries to a weak, almost drained bottle in the 20th Century “The Force” is with us once again. During the 18th and 19th and early 20th centuries Indians were conquered, rivers crossed, towns developed, food planted, etc. until the West was won and America was a land undivided by geography, topography, politics or race, religion or creed.

Mid to late 20th century was a period of withdrawal from “The Force.” Isolationism became the creed. We were dragged into the 1st and 2nd World Wars thinking that behind the distance from Europe to the East Coast we were protected from demagogues and movements led by demagogues. When it was proved that the seas were a minefield to trade we came to the rescue of Europe and, on the other side of the globe, China, Australia, the Nesia’s, New Zealand, et al. We were so successful in our efforts that once the cork was popped out of the bottle of “Force” the movement was renewed. We planted the idea of Destiny in the minds and hearts of South Korea’s population but were halted, physically, at the 38th parallel. The idea, however, was established and remains as a growing entity relentlessly pushing contra-ideology . That was in the East.

On the Western Front, The Cold War ensued against the ideology of the Communist Union of the Soviet Socialists. With the collapse of the Berlin Wall as a symbol of success, it was time for America to turn its attention to another arena. And where else should that arena be located but the middle-east. The oil basin. Will we be pushed out, eventually, like we were pushed from Vietnam? I don’t think it really matters. At the very least, like in Vietnam, the idea will be planted. A taste of freedom, western goods and services is a taste with a long life and strong aftertaste. And that will happen, over time, not with more soldiers, although there may be more soldiers for awhile longer, but with a weaker Dollar. A WEAKER DOLLAR. Keep that in mind. A WEAKER DOLLAR. Like oil to a squeaky wheel, a weaker Dollar will loosen rust and make things turn faster and with less noise. A WEAKER DOLLAR. A WEAKER DOLLAR.

I will leave it to other more verbose pundits to write the book on this subject. I offer this opinion as leavening.

Thank God for Veteran’s without whose sacrifices nothing would be as it is. So you ladies may “Save a Horse…Ride a cowboy” but don’t forget to thank a Vet.

Love to all,

Your own jarhead (Marine)
