FROSTY FUTURES
WEDNESDAY MARCH 31, 2006
Who is to blame for the immigration fiasco? What to do about all the illegal
aliens? Stand back, climb up on a good perch and look down on the situation
in America as it is seen from a disentangled perspective. My own vision is a
mass of people rather like an ant population, being invaded by a foreign ant
population bringing in a new set of capabilities, that both solve some
problems and create others. Motive and opportunity are good places to begin
when asking the above questions. Who has the motive to disorganize the
domestic workforce? Who has the power to create the opportunity to
disorganize the domestic workforce? Obviously, to me, the biggest
beneficiaries are that class that make up big business, in particular the
military-industrial complex, of which former President Eisenhower warned us
about in his last term in office. Well, we didn’t listen, we didn’t hold our
elected officials to a high enough standard to avoid the bribes, lobbying,
chicanery, lies, manipulations of committee chairs in both House and Senate
and on and on ad nauseum.
But before we get overly pejorative, let’s stop a minute and reflect on who
“they” are and who “we” are. I’ll speak for “me” and let you all decide for
yourself who you are. My Dad’s family escaped religious persecution by
coming to America in the late 17th century. They were Society of Friends
(Quakers), abolitionists prior to and during the Civil War (War Between the
States for our Southern friends) around the High Point, N.C. area and helped
settle Oregon in the late 19th century as lumber jacks. My Mom’s family were
immigrants from Sicily (My Papa) and Naples, Italy (My Mama) in the very
early 1900’s. There were eight children who survived and Papa fed the family
by hook or crook as a deputy sheriff in Brazos County, Texas and then as a
restaurateur in upstate NY. I volunteered for the Marine Corps and then
volunteered to go to Vietnam, but never made it to hero status. I went to
college on the GI bill and now receive my medical care from the VA. I’ve
been self employed more than I have been an employee.
From my perspective our history is one of kicking ass and moving the
indigenous people out of our way. We moved productively from coast to coast.
We ran out the English, the French, the Spanish and all their ilk. The prime
force behind this movement was the desire on the part of landed aristocracy
to obtain more land, more wealth, more power. The “common man” was the tool
used to obtain those objectives. In history this has been called “Manifest
Destiny.” And so, what has changed? My answer is “nothing.” It is still the
“landed aristocracy” who use their power to create treaties (NAFTA, CAFTA,
etc.) that allow barriers to be lowered, new markets to be opened, and all
at the cost of our domestic workforce. Econ 101 teaches that capital chases
cheap labor. Period. So Capitalists will do one of two things, or both, by
taking capital goods “outsourced” or bringing in (call that allowing) cheap
labor from foreign sources. This has resulted in populist politicians crying
“foul” and using empathy to gain favor with displaced worker/voters. And
it’s all in an attempt to get power. Nothing will change, regardless of who
gets elected. The next question for me is: How do I capitalize on what is
happening? How do I protect my space, my territory? And you should ask
yourself the same questions. But one thing for sure…..don’t believe anything
a politician tells you near the time for an election.
